Dr. Chen provides physics support for the dosimetry staff, maintaining dose and monitor unit calculation software for external beam therapies. She is developing CT simulation procedures for the department and provides quality assurance of CT scanners, simulators, and simulation software. She also participates in planning Cyberknife radiosurgery treatments.

Dr. Chen’s main research interest is in improving patient dose estimates in external beam radiotherapy. She developed a procedure to calibrate an amorphous-silicon portal imaging device for quantitative radiation measurements during a patient’s treatment. She is validating a fast Monte Carlo-based method to calculate electron beam output factors and depth dose curves given patient-specific electron inserts. She is also involved in projects investigating the clinical uses of megavoltage cone-beam CT and participated in a dosimetric comparison of permanent prostate implants using Cs-131 and I-125.
