Professional Focus

Dr. Smith is involved in a broad spectrum of projects that apply physics and engineering to facilitate the treatment of patients with radiation. He is investigating robotic motion compensation for respiratory and other patient motion during radiation treatment. He is also involved in mathematical modeling of normal tissue complication and tumor control probabilities to allow quantitative comparison of treatment plans, and prediction of effects as well as techniques for image-guided radiation treatment. Last, he is exploring inverse techniques to produce optimal treatment plans for complex 3D planning situations in radiation therapy to allow the treatment of difficult sites with unprecedented conformation of the high dose volume to the tumor and low dose to surrounding normal structures.
