Program and Instructors

Overview

Anticipated selection criteria follow the guidelines of CAMPEP standards of practice (http://campep.org/res.asp).

The Department treats about 2500 new patients per year on 5 gantry-based linear accelerators (Varian True Beam, TrueBeam STx, Elekta Versa, Siemens Artiste and Siemens Oncor) at 3 separate sites. We have an active program in IMRT-IGRT treatments, with the majority of patients being treated with inverse-planned IMRT each day. In addition, the Department has an active program in HDR and LDR brachytherapy, a program in Intraoperative Radiotherapy with 2 Mobetrons (portable electron accelerators) and with the Intrabeam device, 3 dedicated 4D-CT scanners for treatment planning, Tomotherapy, Gamma Knife and Cyberknife radiosurgery, clinical and research hyperthermia programs, and a clinical program to treat ocular melanomas with protons. We perform many special procedures such as SRS/SBRT, Cranio-spinal irradiation and Total-body irradiation. Our IGRT and motion management programs include EPID and OBI, MV CBCT, MV CT, kV CBCT, 4D CBCT, VisionRT, Brainlab, Exactract, gating and real time tumor motion tracking. We have active research programs designed to improve dose localization in cancer patients. Physics research projects span the areas of robotic brachytherapy, cross-platform comparison, SRS/SBRT, deformable image registration, motion management, hyperthermia and thermal therapy technology.

The Department of Radiation Oncology has long experience with the use of advanced treatment planning for complex treatment volumes and re-treatments. Treatment planning capabilities include Pinnacle, Eclipse, iPlan, GammaPlan, Multiplan, Oncentra, Raystation, MIM and Velocity.

We cooperate closely with the UCSF Departments of Pediatrics, Radiology and Biomedical Imaging, and Neurological Surgery, leading to many interesting clinical research programs.
