Consultative and therapeutic services are available to patients with cancer and other conditions requiring radiotherapy at UCSF Medical Center Mt Zion or Parnassus campuses. There is a full range of support, including dosimetry, computerized treatment planning, individualized multi-leaf beam-shaping, blocking, brachytherapy, radiosurgery (both body and CNS), intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) and hyperthermia. The department has 3 simulators, 2 planning CT scanners, 6 linear accelerators with capabilities of 6 and 18 MeV plus electrons, and a Gamma Knife treatment facility for brain tumors. The department supports various Brachytherapy techniques including, HDR and PDR remote afterloading machines, a portable IORT linac as well as both ultrasound and microwave hyperthermia are also available
Extensive clinical radiation therapy research programs are under way. These include studies designed to find better ways to treat malignancies such as squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck, brain tumors, adenocarcinoma of the breast, brain metastases, cancer of the lung, pediatric tumors, and prostate cancer. Investigations of new approaches to radiation therapy include studies of hyperthermia, chemotherapy and the use of chemical agents that selectively sensitize hypoxic tumor cells to irradiation. The department is extensively involved in physics development, including three dimensional and intensity modulated radiotherapy. These techniques allow for retreatment after prior radiotherapy in selected cases as well as dose escalation in primary cases.
