Professional Focus
Dr. Yom is a radiation oncologist who specializes in the treatment of head and neck, skin and thoracic cancers. She is particularly interested in understanding biologic processes which have impact on the efficacy of radiation therapy, as well as emerging radiotherapeutic, biologic, and clinical techniques aimed at reducing the toxicities of treatment. In head and neck and skin cancer, she has studied a variety of issues related to chemoradiation and combined modality treatments, technical aspects of radiation delivery, and radiation-related prognostic factors and post-treatment management. In lung cancer, she has conducted research on combined modality treatment and is experienced in both stereotactic and intensity-modulated radiation techniques in the treatment of early-stage and locoregionally advanced lung cancers. She is experienced with many rare tumor types in the head and neck, cutaneous, and thoracic regions.
Dr. Yom is a national-level investigator in the NRG Oncology cancer research group. At UCSF, she supervises a number of translational biologically and radiographically based studies as well as clinical trials aimed at finding novel and more effective forms of therapy. She is a member of several national-level guidelines committees issuing recommended pathways for high quality cancer care. She regularly participates in major educational conferences and works as an editor or reviewer at several cancer journals.
Dr. Yom is committed to UCSF’s tradition of technical innovation and provides consultation for her patients drawing from a wide range of radiotherapy techniques, to produce the best individualized plan for each patient. It is hoped that the continuous optimization of radiotherapy practice and the reduction of toxicities, both through technical and biologic means, will improve quality of life and enable physicians to deliver more intelligently targeted treatments in search of a better chance of cure. She believes in multidisciplinary management and a unified, team-oriented approach to patient care.
