On Saturday, April 4, 2026, several UCSF Radiation Oncology faculty and staff hosted the second Rad Onc Day event where the department welcomed 30 high school students to the Mission Bay clinic to learn about the specialty of radiation oncology and the various careers within it. The students were from Envision (an internship hosted by the UCSF Dept, of Neurosurgery and Oasis for Girls), Oakland Leaf (an afterschool program nonprofit), and Mountain View High School. In groups of 4-5, students attended seven hands-on labs based on the following radiation oncology roles:

  • MD Support Practice Coordinator
  • Medical Physicist and Dosimetrist
  • New Patient Coordinator
  • Radiation Oncologist
  • Radiation Therapist
  • Registered Nurse
  • Revenue Cycle Analyst and Authorizations Coordinator

The students were also provided with supplies, UCSF Rad Onc branded swag, and lunch. At the end of the event, students competed for prizes during a fun quiz based on what they learned in the labs. Overall, Rad Onc Day 2026 was an overwhelming success, and the students had a great time! Several of them have reached out weeks after the event asking how they can connect and continue to learn more about radiation oncology careers. Click this link to see more photos from the event.

None of this would have been possible without the department staff and faculty who volunteered their time and effort to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals.
