The UCSF Department of Radiation Oncology and Office of Continuing Medical Education (CME) organized and convened 70+ multidisciplinary participants at Mission Bay Conference Center in late March for a two-day focused training and update on the scientific bases and technological advances enabling reirradiation.

The course kicked off with reirradiation fundamentals, best practices and workflows. The program also covered radiobiologic principles, physics innovation, and clinical implementation of reirradiation in the following areas: Spine/CNS, Thoracic, Gynecologic, Breast, Head and Neck, Genitourinary, and Gastrointestinal disease site applications. The case-based panels and lively discussions spanned over the weekend.

The course included two distinguished guest lectures:
Phillips Lecture – “Biologic Effects of Proton Therapy” – Harald Paganetti, PhD, Director of Physics Research, Radiation Oncology, Massachusetts General Hospital; Professor of Radiation Oncology, Harvard Medical School
Buschke Lecture – “Proton FLASH Radiotherapy and Re-irradiation for Head & Neck Cancer” – Costas Koumenis, PhD, Richard H. Chamberlain Professor of Radiation Oncology, University of Pennsylvania
