More than 112 participants, a blend of students/trainees and faculty from both the UCSF Department of Radiation Oncology and Stanford Radiation Oncology, gathered last Saturday, August 14th for a dynamic day of activities and presentations to share knowledge and insights in the field of Medical Physics (Event website). The day began with a morning welcome by Stanford’s Lei Xing, PhD, the Jacob Haimson & Sarah S. Donaldson Professor of Medical Physics and Director of Medical Physics Division of Radiation Oncology, and UCSF’s Ke Sheng, PhD, Vice Chair of Medical Physics and Endowed UCSF Chair of Physics and Engineering – both shared the vision and background of their respective departments.
The keynote guest lecturer, Shawn (Liangzhong) Xiang, PhD, Professor in Radiology and Biomedical Engineering at UC Irvine, engaged the group on his 14 year journey “chasing the sound of radiation” with a in-depth presentation on XACT Imaging – “Radioacoustic and Ultrasound Imaging for Real-Time In Vivo Dosimetry and Closed-Loop Adaptive Radiotherapy.”
A fun, trivia Kahoot.IT session broke up the late morning as participants answered questions related to Medical Physics in a timed, pop quiz style. The rest of the day included inspiring faculty presentations, three trainee teams presenting their pitches in a round of Shark Tank, SLAM trainee research presentations and finally, poster presentations and awards. Special thank you to Qihui Liu, PhD, Assistant Professor in Residence and Jess Scholey, PhD, Associate Professor of Medical Physics, who co-organized the retreat for the UCSF side.
